One of the most important life lessons I have learned from art, is that if you’re willing to dedicate all your spare time and effort into it, for years and years, you can learn anything.

Even if you believe you have no talent, anyone can learn to be an artist with the right training, tools, and passion!

Is Drawing a Talent or a Skill?

No. Drawing is a skill.

Talent can make the creative process easier at the start, but anyone can learn how to draw. Some people are more naturally talented and will get better results faster. Others start with zero talent and need more time. In the end, the only way to succeed - for everyone - is practice and hard work.

Always remember: someone who works hard with little natural talent will learn to draw faster than a talented person who never practices. Even a talented person won't get better if they don't practice.

Practice is the key in all cases.

So, Are Artists Born or Made?

It's a little bit of both. Many believe, and I include myself, that everyone is born an artist.

I was not born with an exceptional talent for drawing. I had to draw a lot to get to the level I am at today. I am still improving, and I am sure everyone can do it if they put in the work it takes to get better at anything, including drawing.

Everyone is different, with different strengths and weaknesses. It is important to be aware of the challenges you might face, whether you are talented or not.

A lot of people think they cannot draw after only three months of practice. The truth is they just needed to keep going for a longer period.

How Can You Learn to Draw the Right Way?

People often ask me: Esther, do you have talent? My honest answer is: no, I had no talent at all when I started. I just had love for animals and I was incredibly stubborn. I started at 54.

If you want to learn to draw, you have a lot to learn. But don't get discouraged! Here are the fundamentals that helped me improve fast:

Perspective
Anatomy
Rendering (Light and Shadow)
Color Theory

You don't have to learn them in this order, but I do recommend it.

Don't expect to learn everything right away. It will take years until you feel confident, but you will see improvement right away when you start.

Art is also a great form of relaxation - for me it certainly is. Try to concentrate on the process of creating, not only on the final result.

Conclusion

Drawing is a skill, but talent still plays a role in how quickly you improve.

If drawing were only talent, artists would be perfect from day one. We know that's not the case. It's very common to see beginners become exceptionally good over the years, just like with any other learnable skill.

If anything were easy, everyone would be able to do it. Don't fall into the trap of thinking you will be a professional artist in two weeks. 99% of the artists you admire practiced and studied so much that it's natural they are so good.

Everyone's pace is different. You just need to find yours, and you will get better over time. I promise.

So, can you learn to draw if you have no talent? Yes, you can. Follow a routine, practice mindfully, and most importantly, enjoy the process.
