Today’s Pastel Workshop : Walter! www.waltervanvliet.exto.nl
He walked in nervously, sure he’d mess up everything.
Spoiler alert: he didn’t. Not even once.
To shake off the fear, we started with my favorite trick: drawing upside down.
Why? Because it confuses the bossy left brain and lets the right brain take over — the one that sees colors, not "what it’s supposed to be."
Walter gave me THAT LOOK (“Are you serious?”), but he went along…
And guess what?
He crushed it. Like, completely nailed it.
By the end, he was relaxed, smiling, and holding a drawing he never thought he could make.
He came home an this is what his wife had to say about it:
Fantastic! That you can teach so professionally, see exactly what Walter had to learn. And drawing upside down is what he once did years ago on a portrait drawing course and never applied again. Totally different view on seeing the coloring, and making your brain work hard by coloring what you see! I am grateful to you for what you taught him and he is also blown away by it himself.
